Most people perhaps remember food hubs congregate in merely Magazine Circus and George Town vicinity including Pulau Tikus, Dato Kramat or Gurney. Notably today, plenty of new food zone are established in Bayan Baru neighborhood. The most recent is One Precinct. Used to be an abandoned building next to Mayang Mall, One Precinct at present is the home to many Penang restaurants, featuring Lunarich Italian restaurant that mainly serves pasta and pizza, Wang Zhao – a Thai restaurant offering value set meals during the week targeting factory/office folks, Spices of Penang highlighting Penang cuisine and local favorites, and A-Mex – a Mexican home style meals at affordable price.
If you had sampled Mexican cuisine at Chilis, you'd probably agree their serving size is not for a typical Asian. Although the foods are good, I always have trouble to completely finish my meal when I dine at Chilis. A-Mex restaurant on the other hand, is likely to be a good eatery to experiment if you’re new to Mexican food neither over stuffing nor burning a hole in your pocket. Yet, it doesn’t give too much variance compares to the authentic Mexican food in US. Besides, it is also a good learning place to differentiate between taco, burrito, arco, churros, fajita and quesadilla in case you don’t wish to google for all these terms.
Operated by a young couple, I understood the chef was trained on Mexican food in Sydney. Ambiance is chic, of brief cowboy style despite of space and lighting challenges. Set meals are offered from RM10+ onwards inclusive of drinks and chips.
What is good? I can’t forget their salsa - one of the best on the island but I dislike the chips served with strips of mustard sauce without an option of bare ones. And their generosity of sauces e.g. salsa picante, chipotle, habanero – free flow and self-service, this is something other eateries are not able to keep up. Though the serving size is considerably below average for an Asian male, they feature a great combination of everything on a platter from rice/tortilla, chicken/bacon/sausage/pork/fish and lentils/salad.
