Penang Vegetarian Food A few years back when it came to eating out for Penang vegetarian food, my partner would look disappointing at the same time, giving me that kind of disapproval expression. With the recent healthy eating wave hitting Penang, today's typical vegetarian food is no longer an ordinary vegetarian dishes for vegans. Creatively position on the menu, the vegetarian dishes are also promoted for happy foods! And, we are part of the compulsive eaters, for once a week the least.
Non traditional food at a heritage place - this is the best word to describe Quay Cafe in Penang George Town. Located a few meters from the intersection of Beach Street and Church Street Ghaut in a sea of banks and commerce buildings, this Penang vegetarian restaurant is set-up in a restored colonial building. We walked passing the cafe, did not notice the humble facade of French doors, heading to Jingsi Books & Cafe. Upon returning, it was lunch hour - so that we were glad to spot Quay Cafe when we were greeted by its friendly staff in her golden year."You have to try (our) vegetarian foods, otherwise you'd not know how great they are!", she quipped with a smile.
Penang Vegetarian restaurantA charming place, this Penang vegetarian restaurant is briefly decorated. Red bricks wall, tall ceiling give this little oasis pretty cooling even on a sunny afternoon. Tables and stools of a few variety such as bar and the typical square shaped tables of two heights, this vegan favorite is a self-service restaurant for lunch goers. As one walks in, menu is displayed - then you can order, pay, and would given a number. You also have to collect your own cutlery. Though foods are delivered to you, they appreciate if you can return the eating utensils and cutlery to designated place after completing your meals.
A set of Happy Meals available from Mondays through Fridays is RM5.50, it is served with 3 decent dishes, brown rice and a cup of jelly for dessert. Other rice variety includes Porridge (RM5), Nasi Lemak (RM7), Bento Box (RM15) and Bak Kut Teh (RM10). Pie Ti, Inari, Sushi, Rojak, Popiah, Dumpling, Konnyaku Jelly are those in the list of Side Dishes, offered in between RM1 to RM8. For noodle lovers, they feature Miso Soba, Hokkien, Laksa, Mee Goreng and Pan Mee for RM5 to RM6. Fresh juices i.e. orange and pineapple, soy milk, nutmeg and honey lemon are some of sound beverages here at Quay Cafe. Some of the hot picks such as Char Hor Fun, Char Kuey Kak, Hong Tua Mee, Hong Sao Mee, Herbal Mee Sua and Zha Chiang Mee are offered as a fixed day specialty.
