|Ulu Yam Loh Mee | What's So Special About?|
|Friday, 05 October 2012 00:00|
A little bit of introduction on the dish, Ulu Yam Loh Mee is a handmade noodles in a black starchy sauce, originated from Ulu Yam Lama near Batang Kali in Selangor. Unlike the commonly seen factory produced thin yellow noodles, the noodles are usually handmade and homemade, though the original recipe is perhaps still kept intact! Some claim the texture and taste are closed to fatty (tua pui mee) noodles, but much less oily.
Ulu Yam Loh Mee: What's So Special? To bring you a step closer to imagine, think of the so-called 'shark fin' soup served during the Chinese wedding dinner. Do you always take it with vinegar or without? Either ways, pictures some handmade noodles swimming in this starchy broth? Like it? If you do, then you're likely to sample something that you may like - Ulu Yam Loh Mee. Featuring in thick black sauce, the smell of vinegar is not dubious aside from the savory taste served with vegetables, shrimps, fish cakes and of course the noodles.
Hock Kee Choon Restaurant If you want to sample this dish from the land of its origin, then there is no better place to go than Ulu Yam Lama in Selangor. A small town on the trunk of north-south, Ulu Yam Lama is located in between Kuala Kubu Bahru and Rawang.
To locate the township is not difficult but to pick which restaurants to step into, can perhaps take your head to spin! Most restaurants along the main road (Jalan Besar) of Ulu Yam or Hulu Yam offer this iconic dish. Lucky for us, we went with an experienced foodie, who took us straight to hit Hock Kee Choon after finding out the opposite restaurant who was the co-founder was closed.
What we had? The original Ulu Yam Loh Mee in black starchy broth and the plain soup Loh Mee - the opposite color of the original in addition to stir-fried beehoon and vegetables. For all, the bill showed up RM42 inclusive of Chinese tea for beverages.
