|Batu Caves Hindu Temple & Thaipusam|
Packs of chariot procession, overnight refreshment stalls (panthals), kavadi bearers, coconut breakers, these are the frenzy scenes that spectators can't help but get into the groove too. If you're looking for the world's grandest Thaipusam celebration, Batu Caves Hindu Temple is the destination to be.
Located 12 km north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is the home to Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple since 1891. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, this sacred place is famed for its 272 steps that leads up to the Cave Temple or Cathedral Cave. In 2006, Batu Caves marked another history, featuring the world's tallest statue of Lord Murugan, also known as Subramaniam. A 42.7-meter or 140 feet, this gold painted statue took 3 years to complete, stands right at the foothill. It is the latest icon of Batu Caves Hindu Temple, the largest cave temple in Malaysia.
Admission into the Batu Caves Temple premise is free. Entrance fee into Cave Villa, a museum that is also a gallery at foothill is RM15 per person. Driving is convenience and with a vehicle, you'll be charged RM2 for parking fee. Having said that, the main roads leading to Batu Caves are always congested, thus if you're planning to see the grandest Thaipusam, hop into KTM Komuter is a better solution. It is a new double-tracked electrified train operating from Sentul to Batu Caves. Batu Caves commuter station is just next to the temple, slightly opposite Sungai Batu, the river where devotees perform cleansing ritual. Walkways from Batu Caves KTM station are widened all the way to the main entrance, so it is merely a few minutes walk to throng Batu Caves Hindu Temple. During Thaipusam, KTM Komuter also provides additional train services with half an hour frequency.
