|Penang Hill | New 5-Minute Train Ride & Latest Attractions|
Penang HillOne of the highest peaks on Penang island, Penang Hill or Bukit Bendera is no stranger to many locals and foreigners. Enjoying an average temperature between 21-25 degree Celsius makes it a popular sanctuary to cool off, away from bustling George Town and the vibrant neighborhoods on this tropical island.
Though we had not seen the summit for almost 3 years, most Penang Hill attractions remain unchanged. From the luxury Penang Hill restaurant i.e. David Brown's and Bellevue Penang Hill Hotel, these are still around, diligently and proudly serving the visitors as well as Penang Hill's Gate House, Bel Retiro (Governor's Bungalow), Penang Hill Mosque, Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Hindu Temple, a 32 counder canon of 2.75 tons, Aviary & Ginger Garden, post office and police station, they are the permanent residents of Bukit Bendera as of last weekend. Alas, we did not check out Penang Hill canopy walk, hope this little gem is still intact and perfect for visitors!
Recent Development on the summit of Penang HillSpeaking of change, Penang Hill's food court had been torn down. The venue that reminds most of us for its fried noodles, fried rice, chicken rice or noodles soup, ais kacang and ice-cooled energy drinks is flattened to make way for Penang Hill's Visitor Center. Remember the old wooden coach of Penang Hill funicular train showcased near the food court? It is preserved but this treasure was spotted a few steps away from the original location.
The recent influx of tourists brings in a paid buggy service. These mini-vehicles are golf buggy alike, fitting between 4-6 people in a car, taking visitors to explore the outskirt area over 4 km. If you have physical constraint, this is a great way to see the surrounding of Penang Hill apart from the congregated attractions on the peak. With flora and fauna making their homes here, keep your all your senses peeled to the calls of nature. If you are ready to drain some energy, then get a simple Penang Hill map from train counter, take a stroll on Nature Walk. Or reaching nearby attractions such as Viewing Deck on Summit Road. Try to stay on paved path and you're unlikely to lose your way.
Penang Hill RailwayBidding farewell to the Penang Hill funicular train, the newest to the scene is the efficient, cozy and fast moving new train. Unlike the old funicular train that took 30 minutes on a single journey, the new train only takes about 5 minutes from foothill directly to the summit without stopping at Middle Station. Operating daily from 6:30 am through 8:00 pm (extends to 9 pm on weekends, public & school holidays) at about 10 minutes interval, the queue is pretty short these days. Bring along your MyKad along to enjoy the local rate of RM8, whilst the fare for foreign tourists is RM30 for a return journey.
