Cambodian Temple of The Khmer ArtsBanteay Srei or literally translated to Citadel of Beauty owes its name to the intricate carvings on sandstone that matched up the craft work on wood. This heritage sanctuary was designed on east-west axis with gopura (gate) and a few layers of enclosures. And there are two libraries that were built from laterite, brick and sandstone. As one watches the carvings, scenes and stories from Ramayana epic are as if playing live, right in front of you.
Enormous galleries are pictured on the each and every pediment such as lion-man Narasiṃha clawing the demon Hiraṇyakasipu and sky god Indra creating rain to put out a forest fire started by the fire god Agni to kill the naga king Takṣaka. Famous characters that includes Siva, Uma, Kama, Ravana, Krisna and Arjuna are vividly related on the ancient Angkor architecture at which the boxed-lined structures appear delicate yet absolutely stunning!
Nestled against the Phnom Dei Hill, Banteay Srei is located 25 km north-east of the main group of Angkor temples, on the way to Phnom Koulen National Park. Despite being a bit isolated, it is worth to take a peek on how amazing this little gem is as each carving speaks for itself!
